Speaking of the 3.5mm input, I tried this out with a RØDE VideoMic Pro and works pretty well. You can adjust the input levels and as the signal gets recorded to both channel 1 and channel 2 you can independently set two different levels for your microphone.  I still think it far more likely that users will be plugging external microphones straight into their camera and not directly into the Atomos V.

Atomos has built-in quite a few display function options on the Ninja V. There is finally a Display off function allows for the screen to be turned off without affecting the operation of the unit. I tried this function out but I couldn’t get the screen to turn off.  There is also a Screen Lock function and will become active by tapping the power on/off button on the side of the unit. The Tally light on the rear of the unit will still display red for record and the idle (green) status will be displayed on the front screen LED. Finally, there is a Flip screen option allows you to invert the screen if you need to.

As always in RuggedPCReview.com tests, we used Passmark’s BatteryMon to measure drawdown. We found the Trimble Yuma to be exceptionally power-efficient. With the system set to battery conservation and the display backlight set to its minimum (but still readable) level, we recorded a battery draw of just over four watts, and sometimes even dropping into the three watts. And that was with wireless still on! That is the lowest power draw we ever saw on an Atom-powered device, beating even the miserly Fujitsu UH900. And since, unlike the Fujitsu with its tiny battery, the Yuma has plenty of battery power, its theoretical battery life under test conditions is well over eight hours, with standard batteries. Cranking the Yuma’s very strong backlight all the way up to deliver the full 650 nits its capable of, power draw doubled, but that still only meant 8.5 watts or so.

A Roku remote is included which offers quick shortcut buttons to popular channels like Netflix, though you can also download the free Roku mobile app for your iOS or Android device and use your phone in its place. You can even cast videos straight to the TV from your mobile device. The app and remote allow you to plug in headphones to begin listening to what’s on TV privately. Another great feature of this television comes when you plug in a USB flash drive. Then you can even pause over-the-air live TV broadcasts.

There’s plenty of showy features onboard, too, from the face unlock, which is fast and works well but is probably not super secure, to the “AI camera” mode and fingerprint sensor which can be used to answer calls, take photos and stop alarms as well as unlock the thing.

I mentioned earlier that neither the grill nor the app will warn you when the temperature inside the barbecue falls significantly below the target range. Opening the Timberline 850’s lid will cause the temperature to drop rapidly by 100 degrees or more, so expect cook times to be a little longer than anticipated if you’re frequently opening the grill to baste your food. The temperature probe will otherwise greatly reduce the need to check on your cook frequently, but again, there’s only one probe.

So now that we have seen the differences between the Ninja V and smallHD 502, how does the Ninja V compare against another Atomos product, the Shogun Inferno? The Shogun Inferno has a 1920×1080 resolution 1500 nit display, but it only has a ppi of 325. Above you can the difference at 4x magnification between the Ninja V and the Shogun Inferno. The Ninja V definitely benefits from having more ppi and a smaller screen size.

Around that era, Tek also used this same technology to make a very nice stereo CRT display. It displayed frames at 120 Hz on a conventional colour CRT, and the polarizer in front switched polarization for alternate frames. The user wore ordinary polarized (passive) stereo glasses, so each eye saw frames at 60 hz. Other than slight bleed-through when viewing high contrast things (like wireframes), it was really good.

These are the first of many modules we could end up seeing for the Ninja V. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if we were to see an SDI AtomX module, and also wireless video, finding its way into the expansion slot.

It’s easy to see why USB-C is so popular. For example, data can be transferred rapidly, which is especially useful when it comes to gaming. USB-C also offers charging capabilities, so you can drive your monitor and charge your laptop at the same time with the same cable.

The phone itself looks quite basic, with a plastic back and aluminum frame. It has an IPS LCD 5.5-inch screen, with a 1,280 x 720 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, along with dual speakers with stereo sound for a decent movie-watching experience. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425 processor, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Thankfully, there’s MicroSD card support that lets you expand space up to 128GB.
