The panel has thicker bezels than I expected on a monitor at this price. The XB321HKâs we looked at in April were just about a half inch; here, theyâre a full 3/4-inch and a full inch at the bottom, which is definitely noticeable. Itâs not distracting when gaming but are still a far cry from the âframelessâ trend weâre seeing elsewhere in the gaming monitor world these days.
The Orange Pi 3 also lacks the expandability of the Raspberry Pi, as it only has a 26-pin header for hooking up the machine to other electronics.
The Rock Pi Model A will sell for $39 (1GB), $49 (2GB) and $65 (4GB). The Model B, which adds PoE and a WiFi-ac/Bluetooth 5.0 wireless module will sell for $49 (1GB), $59 (2GB) or $75 (4GB).
As we’ve explained many times with 4K TVs, there’s a point of diminishing returns when it comes to resolution. The human eye can only see so much detail, and extra pixels beyond what you can discern are basically wasted. To get anything out of higher resolutions and their proportionally tinier pixels, you need to sit closer, get a bigger TV, or both.
If you like bright, saturated colours, the 5.5-inch, 2160 x 1080 screen will serve you very well, and the built-in speakers sound better than you’d expect, too. The camera is another strong point with a 13MP main sensor with f/2.0 aperture and a 5MP depth sensor on the back. Even night shots are OK, if a little noisy.
This is an awesome piece of equipment and a tool I will be using for years to come. I was s skeptical about the necessity of an external recorder but I’m not anymore. Grab one!
Most of the single DLP, solid state light source projectors use a “Hybrid” light-source. Instead of a spinning dichroic filter like lamped projectors, they use a spinning phosphor wheel with a blue laser to generate red and green. Some others add in a red laser or red LED to enhance the color range. I can’t think of any projector over a few hundred lumens that is using only LEDs.
I recently came across the most peculiar way to make a color CRT monitor. More than a few oscilloscopes have found their way on to my bench over the years, but I was particularly struck with a find from eBay. A quick look at the display reveals something a little alien. The sharpness is fantastic: each pixel is a perfect, uniform-colored little dot, a feat unequaled even by today’s best LCDs. The designers seem to have chosen a somewhat odd set of pastels for the UI though, and if you move your head just right, you can catch flashes of pure red, green, and blue. It turns out, this Tektronix TDS-754D sports a very peculiar display technology called NuColor — an evolutionary dead-end that was once touted as a superior alternative to traditional color CRTs.
Given how easy it was to market 4K as "better looking than 1080p," TV makers are claiming the same thing with 8K. But resolution is just one aspect of overall picture quality, and not one of the most important ones. Improving other aspects, like contrast ratios, overall brightness for HDR, more lifelike colors and so on, offer better image improvements but are significantly greater technical challenges. This is especially true for LCD technology, something Samsung is still strongly flogging — all of its QLED TVs are just LCD TVs with quantum dots.
To be honest, I have Roman Blacks site bookmarked for years, as it has some neat tricks. I saw that Shift1 system a long time ago AND I use 1-wire devices regularly, and I never made the connection. But it really looks very similar. Thanks for the observation!
